Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan met New Jersey Governor Philip D. Murphy and a high-level U.S. delegation in Kochi on Saturday, pitching Kerala as an investor-friendly destination and proposing collaboration in education and tourism. The meeting, part of an ‘Economic Partnership’ event hosted by Lulu Group chairman M.A. Yusuffali, underscored shared developmental goals and aimed to strengthen bilateral ties between Kerala and New Jersey.
Vijayan highlighted Kerala’s robust infrastructure, including four airports, 18 ports, and the world-class Vizhinjam port, which accommodates large ships without dredging. He emphasized the state’s high literacy rate, simplified business procedures, and thriving sectors like tourism and technology, making it an attractive hub for investors. “Kerala has all the facilities needed for industries,” Vijayan said, noting the state’s ambition to become a knowledge-based society by transforming higher education institutions into centers of excellence through global academic partnerships.
Governor Murphy, addressing the event, expressed New Jersey’s commitment to deepening ties with Kerala in industry, higher education, philanthropy, and cultural exchanges. He acknowledged the significant Malayali community in New Jersey, which has contributed to nearly 3,000 jobs through Indian companies since he took office. “Even in challenging times, relationships must be strengthened,” Murphy said, highlighting opportunities for academic collaborations and institutional partnerships. The event featured a cultural program showcasing Kerala’s diversity and a memento presentation to Murphy from Vijayan.
