A dramatic situation unfolded on counting day in Karnataka when poll officials were forced to break open an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) strongroom after the keys went missing. The incident occurred in Bengaluru, where authorities, under tight security, used tools like a hammer and chisel to gain access to the room containing crucial ballots, leading to a delay in the counting process.
The strongroom stored EVMs related to the Davanagere South bypolls, which were necessitated by the death of veteran leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa. Along with this, votes from the Bagalkot by-election were also scheduled to be counted. The unexpected delay created tension among officials and political parties awaiting results.
The bypolls, though not expected to significantly alter the overall political balance in the state, hold considerable symbolic importance. Both the ruling Indian National Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party are treating the results as a prestige battle, with each aiming to strengthen its political position ahead of future elections.

The Congress is under pressure to retain both seats, as any loss could be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. On the other hand, the BJP sees the bypolls as an opportunity to regain momentum and energise its cadre ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
In conclusion, while the missing keys incident raised concerns about administrative preparedness, officials acted promptly to ensure the counting process could proceed. The bypoll results, though limited in immediate impact, carry significant political weight and could influence the narrative of governance and opposition strength in Karnataka.
