Karnataka’s Namma Metro network has expanded substantially over the past 15 years, growing from an initial 6.7 kilometres to 96.1 kilometres, according to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The expansion reflects the development of Bengaluru’s metro system as a key component of the city’s public transport infrastructure. The network has been developed to improve connectivity across different parts of the city and provide commuters with an alternative to road travel amid rising urbanisation and traffic congestion.
The expansion has taken place through successive phases of metro development, with new corridors extending connectivity to residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres and major employment hubs. The commissioning of additional routes has helped bring metro services to more commuters, including those travelling longer distances for work and education. The growing network is also intended to support a shift towards public transport and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
Shivakumar has also outlined plans to expand Bengaluru’s metro network further, with a target of bringing approximately 175 kilometres of routes into operation by December 2027. The proposed expansion includes additional corridors and the airport line, which is expected to improve connectivity between the city and Kempegowda International Airport. The timelines will depend on construction progress, infrastructure readiness and the completion of necessary project work.

The government has identified metro expansion as an important part of Bengaluru’s long-term urban development strategy. Further improvements in connectivity, station access, parking facilities and integration with other public transport services will be important to ensure that the expanding network meets commuters’ needs. While the increase from 6.7 kilometres to 96.1 kilometres marks a significant change in the city’s transport infrastructure, the effectiveness of future projects will also depend on timely completion, reliable services and convenient connections across Bengaluru.
