Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, recalling his ideals of truth, non-violence, simplicity, compassion and Swadeshi. On Gandhi Jayanti, Modi said Gandhi’s timeless message would continue to guide society towards a better future and contribute to the goal of a Viksit Bharat.
In a post on X, Modi expressed the hope that Gandhi’s enduring message would continue to guide people towards a better society and a developed India. In a separate video message, he highlighted the significance of October 2 and said Gandhi’s ideology had inspired people across the world. He also recalled Gandhi’s influence despite his distance from political power.
Modi said Gandhi’s thoughts and ideals would remain relevant as long as their influence continued among humanity. He described the Mahatma’s life as an enduring source of inspiration based on truth, non-violence, compassion and service. The Prime Minister also highlighted Gandhi’s emphasis on Swadeshi and Khadi as important elements of his message.

The Prime Minister urged people to purchase at least one Khadi product on October 2 and promote the idea of Swadeshi. He recalled Khadi as one of the prominent symbols associated with Gandhi’s promotion of indigenous products. Modi said Gandhi’s principles continued to have relevance in contemporary society and could inspire people in their daily lives.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute to Gandhi and extended greetings to the people of the state on the International Day of Non-Violence. Adityanath recalled Gandhi’s emphasis on truth and non-violence and said his message of freedom through indigenous means and non-violent methods had reached people across the world.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed annually on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the prominent leaders of India’s freedom struggle. The occasion is also observed internationally as the International Day of Non-Violence, recognising the principle of non-violence associated with Gandhi’s philosophy.
