A video showing an alleged confrontation between a customer and a staff member at an HDFC Bank branch in Kanpur has gone viral on social media, triggering a wider debate over professional conduct and the use of caste-based remarks in public spaces. The incident is reported to have taken place at the bank’s Panki branch and has drawn sharp criticism online.
The employee seen in the footage has been identified in multiple reports as Aastha Singh. The video, approximately 43 seconds long, shows the woman engaging in a heated argument with a male customer inside the branch. During the exchange, she is seen standing up from her desk, shouting, and pointing a laptop in the customer’s direction, as tensions escalate in what appears to be a routine banking interaction gone wrong.
The controversy centres on an alleged remark made by the employee during the confrontation — “Thakur hoon main” (I am a Thakur). The statement, which references caste identity, has been widely interpreted by viewers as an attempt to assert dominance or intimidate the customer. The exchange also reportedly involved the use of abusive language, further intensifying public outrage.

The video has circulated widely on platforms such as X, prompting strong reactions from social media users. Many have described the behaviour as unprofessional and inconsistent with the standards expected from employees of a leading private sector bank. Several posts have directly tagged HDFC Bank, demanding a formal inquiry and strict disciplinary action against those responsible.
As of now, HDFC Bank has not issued an official public statement regarding the incident or confirmed whether any internal action has been initiated. Authorities have also not reported the registration of any police complaint in connection with the episode. The matter continues to draw attention as discussions around workplace conduct, customer service ethics, and the misuse of caste identity gain momentum online.
