Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar on Saturday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the alleged Ayodhya Ram Temple donation scam, questioning the credibility of the ongoing probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). He described the alleged misuse of devotees' offerings as a "great sin" and called for strict action against all those found responsible.
Addressing a press conference, Kumar alleged that the investigation process required greater independence and transparency. He questioned the leadership of the SIT, claiming that the person heading the probe was facing a forgery-related case. He asked whether those accused of wrongdoing could be trusted with investigating theft allegations, using comparisons to question the impartiality of the process.
Kumar demanded the immediate dissolution of the trust managing the temple and said the investigation should take place under the supervision of the Supreme Court. He argued that the probe should not be limited to lower-level officials and that anyone involved in the alleged irregularities, regardless of their position, should be held accountable.

The Congress leader also accused the BJP and RSS of using religious issues for political purposes, while asserting that his party would not engage in similar politics. He said the Congress would continue raising concerns related to public issues, including matters affecting students, farmers, women, tribals, Dalits, backward communities and the middle class.
Kumar further criticised the ruling party for targeting the Congress over the issue, saying that questions regarding alleged misuse of temple donations must be addressed by those responsible for managing the institution. He said the trust and authorities connected with the temple should provide answers regarding the allegations raised by devotees and the public.
The controversy surrounding the alleged donation irregularities emerged on June 7. Following a preliminary report submitted by an SIT formed by the Uttar Pradesh government, eight people associated with the counting of cash and valuables received as donations at the Ram temple were arrested. The investigation into the matter is continuing.
