External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar declared that India’s self-reliance, or Atmanirbharta, is the cornerstone for navigating a “volatile and uncertain” global era marked by the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, ongoing conflicts, and trade disruptions. Speaking at the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality’s conclave on Wednesday, themed Invincible Spirit of India, Jaishankar emphasized that embracing self-reliance strengthens India’s resilience and lays the foundation for a developed Viksit Bharat.
Addressing the challenges of globalization and urbanization, which often erode cultural traditions, Jaishankar highlighted tourism’s role in preserving India’s heritage while boosting its global appeal. “Our civilization’s diversity and richness are our strength,” he said, noting recent efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for multiple Indian sites. “Tourism connects India to the world more than diplomacy, enhancing Brand India and preparing a global workforce.”
Jaishankar underscored tourism’s economic impact, from infrastructure development to job creation, especially in times of global economic strain. He referenced the U.S. imposing a 50% tariff on Indian imports effective August 27, suggesting that nations with strong domestic demand, like India, are better positioned to weather such upheavals. “Few sectors energize the economy and multiply employment as effectively as tourism,” he stated.

Reflecting on India’s 2023 G20 presidency, Jaishankar recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy to showcase every state’s cultural and natural heritage. G20 events were deliberately held near iconic sites, offering delegates immersive experiences that highlighted India’s diversity. “This connected India to the world and the world to India,” he said, noting the lasting positive impressions created.
Rooted in the principles of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) and Atithi Devo Bhava (guest is God), Jaishankar urged the tourism industry to leverage India’s cultural wealth to foster global connections while embracing self-reliance to counter unpredictability. “Our people’s self-belief has overcome countless adversities, driving progress and prosperity,” he said, calling for continued efforts to project India’s heritage globally.
