The Border Security Force (BSF) has expanded its canine unit with two powerful native breeds — the Rampur Hound and the Mudhol Hound. Over 150 of these Indian dogs have been deployed across sensitive operational zones, including the nation’s western and eastern borders, to bolster surveillance and anti-Naxal operations. Officials say these indigenous breeds have emerged as “terror” for terrorists and insurgents.
The Rampur Hound, originating from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, is known for its strength, speed, and stamina. Historically bred by Mughal nobles and local rulers for hunting jackals and leopards, the breed is tall, muscular, and agile. Renowned for its courage and intelligence, the Rampur Hound is fiercely loyal yet gentle, making it ideal for demanding field operations. With proper training and care, these dogs can serve effectively for over a decade.
On the other hand, the Mudhol Hound — also called the Caravan Hound — hails from the Deccan Plateau, particularly in Karnataka. Sleek, strong, and alert, this breed was historically used by the Maratha armies for hunting and guarding. With keen eyesight and lightning-fast reflexes, Mudhol Hounds are known for their unmatched tracking and guarding capabilities, traits now being leveraged by the BSF for strategic operations.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology even celebrated the Mudhol Hound’s heritage in 2025 by featuring it on a postage stamp. The breed made history earlier, when a BSF Mudhol named “Riya” won the titles of Best in Tracker Trade and Best Dog of the Meet at the 2024 All India Police Duty Meet in Lucknow — the first time an Indian breed achieved the honour.
The successful induction of indigenous dogs reflects a broader shift toward self-reliance in national security resources. It also reinforces the government’s efforts to promote Indian breeds, highlighting their intelligence, adaptability, and value in modern policing and defense operations.
