An Indian national has died due to medical complications aboard a vessel docked at Duqm Port in Oman, prompting the Indian Embassy in Muscat to initiate repatriation procedures for the return of his mortal remains. The incident has drawn attention to the welfare of Indian seafarers working in international waters, with diplomatic authorities confirming that they are closely coordinating with the ship management company and other stakeholders.
The deceased has been identified as Nishanth Uirthanathan, a 35-year-old Second Officer from Tamil Nadu. He was serving aboard the vessel MT Celestial when he reportedly passed away due to medical complications while the ship was stationed at the port. His sudden death has left colleagues and authorities managing both procedural and humanitarian concerns at the port.
In an official statement shared on social media platform X, the Embassy of India in Muscat confirmed the incident and said it is actively working to ensure the timely repatriation of the body. The mission stated that it has been in continuous contact with the ship’s management company and is coordinating with all relevant authorities to complete necessary formalities without delay.

The embassy further noted that arrangements are being made to send the mortal remains back to India “at the earliest possible time.” Officials emphasized that the process involves coordination between multiple agencies, including port authorities, the shipping company, and local administrative bodies in Oman.
Diplomatic sources highlighted that Indian missions abroad regularly handle such cases involving seafarers and migrant workers, ensuring both legal procedures and humanitarian support are followed. In this case, the focus remains on completing documentation and transportation arrangements efficiently while respecting the sensitivities of the situation.
The incident underscores the risks faced by seafarers who work long periods away from home under challenging conditions. Authorities are expected to complete the repatriation process once all clearances are secured, after which the remains will be sent to Tamil Nadu for final rites by the family.
