Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel has been appointed as the new head coach of Joburg Super Kings ahead of the upcoming season of the SA20 league. Morkel takes over the role after Stephen Fleming stepped down from the franchise earlier this month to take charge as England’s Test cricket coach.
Morkel brings extensive experience as both a player and coach to the Super Kings setup. He represented South Africa in one Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20 Internationals between 2004 and 2015. During a successful T20 career spanning 319 matches, he scored more than 4,000 runs and claimed nearly 250 wickets across various leagues worldwide.
The appointment also strengthens Morkel’s long-standing association with the Super Kings brand. He previously played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League and has been part of the Joburg Super Kings coaching structure since the franchise’s launch in SA20, making him familiar with the team’s culture and operations.

Expressing his excitement after taking charge, Morkel said becoming head coach of Joburg Super Kings was a special moment in his career. He recalled his journey from representing the Super Kings as a player to now leading one of its franchises and said he aims to build on the team’s existing foundation while helping players reach their full potential.
Joburg Super Kings have not yet reached the SA20 final in their four seasons, and guiding the team to the title match will be one of Morkel’s immediate challenges. Before this appointment, he worked as a consultant coach with the South African national team during the recent T20 World Cup, where the side reached the semi-finals.
Franchise owner Rupa Gurunath praised Morkel’s contribution over the years, saying he understands the Super Kings’ values and has developed strong relationships with players and support staff. KS Viswanathan, Director of Joburg Super Kings, also expressed confidence in Morkel’s leadership abilities and knowledge of South African cricket.
The fifth season of SA20 is scheduled to begin on January 17, 2027, with Joburg Super Kings set to start their campaign on January 18. The franchise will hope Morkel’s experience and familiarity with the team can help them achieve their first appearance in the tournament final.
