India and Myanmar have discussed ways to expand their defence partnership, with officials from both countries reviewing ongoing cooperation and considering new areas of engagement. The discussions took place during the third India-Myanmar Defence Cooperation Meeting in Guwahati on October 7. The talks focused on strengthening existing mechanisms and identifying opportunities for deeper collaboration between the two neighbouring countries.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Myanmar’s Chief of Armed Forces Training, Lt Gen Pyae Sone Linn, jointly led the meeting. Both sides reviewed the progress made since their previous defence cooperation meeting in Yangon in 2025. Training, institutional exchanges and capacity building featured among the areas discussed as the two countries looked to further develop their defence relationship.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Myanmar to acknowledge India’s humanitarian response after the earthquake that struck the country. India provided assistance through Operation Brahma as part of its emergency relief efforts. The response has added another dimension to bilateral engagement, alongside the two countries’ continuing cooperation in defence and security.

The latest discussions come amid growing contact between the Indian and Myanmar armed forces, particularly their navies. Earlier this year, then Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi visited Myanmar and held talks with senior military and naval officials. Maritime security, training, hydrographic cooperation and improving coordination between the two navies were among the issues considered during the visit.
The naval engagement also included discussions with Myanmar Defence Minister General Htun Aung and senior commanders. The meetings examined ways to strengthen defence links and increase professional interaction between the two sides. Such exchanges are aimed at improving cooperation in areas of shared interest while maintaining regular communication between the two militaries.
During the visit, Indian-supported equipment was also provided to Myanmar’s Naval Training Command, including a containerised small-arms simulator and a rigid inflatable boat. The assistance forms part of India’s wider capacity-building engagement with Myanmar. The latest defence meeting further underlines the two countries’ efforts to maintain and broaden cooperation through training, military exchanges and security-related initiatives.
