With only two days remaining before the July 31 deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, taxpayers across India are rushing to complete the process. While many individuals are hoping for an extension of the deadline due to the approaching due date, the Income Tax Department and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) have not announced any change so far. The deadline applies to most individual taxpayers, including salaried employees, pensioners, and individuals whose accounts are not required to be audited under income tax regulations. Taxpayers who fail to submit their returns within the prescribed timeline may still be able to file belated returns later, but they could face additional costs and restrictions.
As the deadline approaches, taxpayers are advised not to rely on speculation about an extension unless there is an official notification from the government. In previous years, filing deadlines have occasionally been extended due to technical issues or exceptional circumstances, but any such relief is only valid after a formal announcement by the tax authorities. For the current assessment year, individuals should treat July 31 as the final date for timely filing of their income tax returns. Missing the deadline can result in late filing fees under the Income Tax Act and may also affect certain benefits available to taxpayers, including the ability to carry forward specific losses.
One of the most important steps before filing an ITR is selecting the correct return form. Taxpayers must choose the form based on their sources of income, residential status, investments, and other financial details. Using the wrong ITR form can lead to the return being classified as defective or requiring correction. The Income Tax Department has notified different forms for different categories of taxpayers. Individuals with straightforward salary income and limited deductions may use simpler forms, while taxpayers with income from business, profession, capital gains, foreign assets, or multiple sources may need to select more detailed forms.

Taxpayers should also ensure that the information entered in their returns matches official records available with the department. Details such as salary income, interest earnings, investments, tax deductions, and tax payments should be carefully checked before submission. Refund claims are another key reason why timely and accurate filing is important. Individuals who have paid excess tax during the financial year can claim refunds while filing their returns. However, mistakes in bank account details, mismatches in reported income, or incorrect claims can delay refund processing.
Before filing, taxpayers should keep essential documents ready, including Form 16 issued by employers, bank statements, interest certificates, investment proofs, and details of deductions claimed under various sections of the Income Tax Act. Reviewing these documents can help prevent errors and reduce the chances of receiving notices from the tax department. After submitting the return, taxpayers must complete the verification process. The return filing process is not considered complete until verification is successfully done through available methods such as electronic verification or other approved procedures. Failure to verify the return within the prescribed period can result in the filing being treated as invalid.
The Income Tax Department has repeatedly encouraged taxpayers to avoid last-minute filing and complete the process well before the deadline. A sudden increase in users accessing the online filing portal close to July 31 can sometimes lead to technical difficulties, making early submission advisable. For taxpayers who have not yet filed their returns, the immediate priority should be gathering all required documents, selecting the appropriate ITR form, checking financial details carefully, and completing verification after submission. With no official extension announced yet, taxpayers should consider July 31 as the final deadline for timely filing of AY 2026-27 returns. Completing the process on time can help avoid penalties, ensure smoother refund processing, and maintain compliance with income tax regulations.
