A massive 1,000-kilometre cloud band has formed over northwest India and Pakistan, signaling unsettled weather for the region this weekend, according to satellite images shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is expected to bring rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to multiple states, providing relief from the recent heat but also posing challenges for farmers and residents.
The weather disturbance is driven by an active Western Disturbance over East Iran and adjoining Afghanistan, combined with an upper air cyclonic circulation over East Rajasthan. A trough extending from East Rajasthan to the east-central Arabian Sea is further contributing to unstable conditions. On Friday, the system is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, while by Saturday, the impact will extend to Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
Rainfall and gusty winds are likely to continue across the northwestern and central states through April 8. A separate trough stretching from East Jharkhand to South Chhattisgarh is enhancing convective activity, while a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact northwest India from April 7 onwards. Farmers have been advised to monitor the situation closely, as the showers may affect standing crops.

Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) are already experiencing a shift in weather, with dust-laden skies giving way to thunderstorms. The IMD has warned of lightning, gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, and heavy showers over Delhi-NCR during the next 24 hours. A yellow alert has been issued for Saturday, predicting light rain or drizzle accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and surface winds of 20-30 kmph, gusting up to 40 kmph.
Madhya Pradesh is also on alert, with the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Bhopal forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and hail affecting large parts of the state through April 5. Residents are advised to take precautions against the volatile conditions.
The approaching cloud band and associated disturbances highlight the influence of Western Disturbances in shaping India’s pre-monsoon weather patterns, bringing short-term relief from heat while generating localized hazards such as strong winds, hail, and lightning across the northwestern and central regions.
