Kerala is set to welcome the annual southwest monsoon, with weather conditions turning increasingly favourable for its onset along the state's coast. The development marks a significant milestone in India’s climatic calendar, as the arrival of the monsoon over Kerala traditionally signals the beginning of the country’s four-month rainy season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a substantial increase in rainfall activity across the state in the coming days, bringing relief from the intense summer heat while also raising concerns about heavy rain-related hazards.

The progress of the monsoon is being closely monitored nationwide because its arrival over Kerala serves as the benchmark for its subsequent advance across other parts of India. After weeks of soaring temperatures and humid conditions, residents across the state are expected to experience widespread showers that could provide much-needed respite and improve water availability in reservoirs, rivers and agricultural areas.

In anticipation of intense rainfall, the IMD has issued orange alerts for several districts. Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram have been placed under orange alert on Wednesday and Thursday, while Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode are under alert on Thursday. Authorities have urged residents, particularly those in vulnerable regions, to remain cautious as heavy rainfall is expected in short durations.

Weather experts have warned that isolated areas could receive between 11 and 20 centimetres of rain within a short period. Such intense downpours increase the risk of flash floods in urban centres and landslides in hilly terrain. In response, disaster management agencies and local authorities have intensified monitoring efforts and preparedness measures to minimise potential damage and ensure public safety.

Apart from the orange alerts, yellow alerts have also been issued for several other districts, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall across large parts of the state. The approaching monsoon is also expected to generate rough sea conditions and strong winds along Kerala’s coastline. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until weather conditions improve and official advisories are withdrawn.

Local bodies and civic agencies have accelerated pre-monsoon preparations, including the cleaning of drains, canals and waterways to reduce flooding risks. With the first widespread monsoon showers expected to transform Kerala’s landscape in the coming days, the seasonal rains are also anticipated to play a vital role in supporting agriculture, replenishing water resources and sustaining economic activity across much of the country.
