Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveiled ambitious plans to bolster the state’s rural economy through the establishment of new milk processing plants in Nahan, Nalagarh, Mohal, and Rohru. Additionally, a milk chilling center in Jalari, Hamirpur, and a bulk milk cooler in Jhalera, Una, will be set up to modernize the dairy infrastructure, addressing the needs of the state’s predominantly rural population, where over 90% engage in farming.
The Chief Minister emphasized that these facilities will enhance milk collection, ensure fair returns for farmers, and elevate quality standards in milk procurement. To further streamline operations, the Himachal Pradesh Milk Federation (Milkfed) will implement an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
This digital platform will provide farmers with real-time access to critical information, including milk collection updates, payment status, quality test results, and procurement rates, directly on their mobile phones. By digitizing transactions, the ERP system aims to minimize errors, prevent manipulation, and expedite payments through direct bank transfers, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
Additionally, a state-of-the-art milk processing plant is under construction in Dhagwar, Kangra district. Once operational, it will produce a range of dairy products, including curd, lassi, butter, ghee, paneer, flavored milk, khoya, and mozzarella cheese. This facility is expected to significantly benefit dairy farmers by offering remunerative prices and expanding market opportunities.
