Travel chaos and safety fears gripped Himachal on Wednesday after a massive landslide near Shillai in Sirmaur district buried a crucial stretch of National Highway 707, cutting off key routes and triggering emergency alerts across the region.
According to state officials, the Hatkoti–Paonta Sahib section of NH-707 was completely blocked after a large chunk of the hillside collapsed. Restoration work began quickly, but continued falling debris hampered progress, raising concerns about further disruptions.
And the worst may not be over.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas on July 21 and 22, with a yellow warning in place until July 20 across seven of Himachal’s twelve districts.

State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) data revealed a staggering 258 roads closed, with the Mandi district hit hardest (140 blocked), followed by Sirmaur (55) and Kullu (35). Meanwhile, 171 water-supply schemes and 151 power transformers have also been disrupted due to relentless rain.
Rainfall totals are mounting, with Koti, Jaton Barrage, and Sarahan receiving up to 40mm, while Dadahu, Nahan, Manali, and Narkanda also recorded significant showers.
As landslides continue and warnings escalate, residents and travelers are urged to stay alert and avoid risky routes. Himachal's monsoon fury has only just begun.
