Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took decisive action on Sunday, reviewing the dire flood situation caused by relentless rainfall across the state. In a high-level meeting at his official residence, Oak Over, Sukhu directed the Chief Secretary to expedite rescue and relief operations, emphasizing that the safety of residents is the state government’s top priority. The move comes as torrential rains continue to wreak havoc, triggering landslides, flash floods, and widespread infrastructure damage.
On Saturday, Sukhu conducted an aerial survey of severely affected areas in Chamba and Kangra districts to assess the extent of the devastation. His planned visit to Kullu on Sunday was canceled due to adverse weather conditions, forcing him to return to Shimla by road from Chandigarh. Upon arrival, he held detailed discussions with the Chief Secretary, who provided updates on the ongoing relief efforts and the dire conditions in flood-hit regions. Sukhu reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting affected families, vowing to leave no stone unturned in providing aid.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across multiple districts, including Una, Bilaspur, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, through Tuesday. The state has already recorded 72% excess rainfall in August, exacerbating the crisis with 91 flash floods, 45 cloudbursts, and 93 major landslides since June 20. The State Emergency Operation Centre reports 320 deaths, Rs 3,042 crore in losses, and over 4,000 homes damaged.

Sukhu urged residents to adhere strictly to administrative advisories, avoid rivers and streams, and remain vigilant amid the ongoing deluge. “The government stands firmly with every affected family,” he said, appealing for public cooperation in assisting those in distress. With roads, including three national highways, closed and power and water supply schemes disrupted, the Chief Minister stressed the need for swift action to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of Himachal’s residents as the state braces for more rain.
