The Government of India has informed Parliament that 431 people died due to snakebite incidents across the country last year, highlighting a persistent public health concern that continues to affect rural and vulnerable populations. The data was shared in response to a query, drawing attention to the need for improved awareness, prevention, and access to timely medical care.

According to the government’s statement, snakebites remain a significant cause of accidental deaths, particularly in agrarian regions where people frequently come into contact with snakes while working in fields or living in close proximity to natural habitats. Experts note that many of these fatalities are preventable with early intervention, appropriate first aid, and the availability of anti-venom treatment.

Health officials have emphasized that delays in reaching medical facilities and reliance on traditional remedies often worsen outcomes. In several cases, victims are taken to local healers instead of hospitals, reducing the chances of survival. The government has been working to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in high-risk areas, including ensuring the supply of anti-venom and training medical personnel to handle such emergencies effectively.
