Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi unleashed a scathing attack on the Assam Police for summoning senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar in a contentious sedition case, declaring that Assam is once again grabbing headlines "for all the wrong reasons." The Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha accused the state’s leadership of plunging Assam into a quagmire of "greed, corruption, incompetency, and lawlessness," a stark departure from the values that define the "Assam way."
In a fiery post on X, Gogoi expressed dismay over the summons issued to the two prominent journalists, who have been asked to appear before the Guwahati City police’s crime branch on August 22. He emphasized that the people of Assam yearn for a leadership that will foster an "Assam of their dreams," one rooted in unity, progress, and inclusivity. "This is not how we envision our state," Gogoi stated, highlighting the growing discontent among Assam’s citizens over the government’s actions.
Gogoi envisioned a "bor (greater) Assam" built on the foundation of Assamese principles, driven by the state’s vibrant and diverse youth from all ethnicities, religions, and linguistic backgrounds. He called for a leadership that inspires hope and creativity, rather than one that stifles dissent through heavy-handed measures like sedition charges. The summons have sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the state’s commitment to press freedom and democratic values.
