The Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police crime branch has taken notorious gangster Subhash Singh Thakur into custody from Fatehgarh Central Jail in Uttar Pradesh. This significant development relates to the brutal 2022 murder of Virar-based builder Samay Chauhan in the Mira Road area of Thane district. After completing necessary legal procedures, Thakur was brought to Vasai and produced before a special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA), which granted police remand until December 22, 2025. Special Public Prosecutor Sanjay More represented the state during the hearing.
Investigations reveal that Thakur allegedly masterminded the contract killing, issuing direct instructions to accused Akhilesh Tiwari to carry out the murder and subsequently dispose of the victim's mobile phone to eliminate evidence. The motive traces back to an intense property dispute between local builder Rahul Dubey and Chauhan. Authorities are actively probing the financial details of the contract, including the exact amount paid to Thakur, while also examining his involvement in separate extortion cases linked to the underworld network.
So far, 13 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case under stringent MCOCA provisions. These include the alleged shooters Manish Singh and Rahul Sharma, along with accomplice Abhishek Singh, who were apprehended in Varanasi earlier this year. Rahul Dubey, identified as a key figure in instigating the hit, was arrested from Ballia in Bihar. The arrests underscore the deep-rooted influence of organized crime syndicates in real estate conflicts within the Mumbai metropolitan region.

Subhash Singh Thakur, once believed to have maintained close associations with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim before reportedly severing ties, is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the infamous 1992 JJ Hospital shootout in Mumbai. He had successfully delayed arrest in the Chauhan case by remaining admitted to Sir Sundarlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University on medical grounds from 2019 until his transfer back to Fatehgarh Central Jail in 2024, prompting immediate action by the MBVV police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Doiphode has confirmed that Thakur is now in custody specifically for his alleged central role in conspiring, planning, and facilitating the 2022 murder. Interrogations are ongoing to extract further details about the conspiracy and potential additional accomplices. Thakur is scheduled to be produced again before the Thane Sessions Court on December 22, marking a crucial step forward in this high-profile organized crime investigation.
