The vibrant Ganpati festival reached a fever pitch on its fifth day as over 40,000 idols of Lord Ganesh were immersed across Mumbai’s seas, lakes, and artificial ponds, civic officials reported. By 9 am Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded 40,225 immersions, including 39,037 household idols, 1,175 from public mandals, and 13 Goddess Hartalika idols, with no incidents reported during the process.
The festival, which kicked off on Ganesh Chaturthi (Aug 27) and runs until Anant Chaturdashi (Sep 6), sees devotees immersing idols after one and a half, five, or seven days. Earlier, on Friday, 60,177 idols were immersed, with a near-even split between Plaster of Paris (29,683) and eco-friendly clay (30,494) idols.
To curb environmental impact, the BMC set up 290 artificial ponds alongside 70 natural water bodies like chowpatties and seashores. The civic body also pushed for eco-friendly idols to be immersed in buckets or drums while mandating that plaster of Paris idols under six feet be submerged in artificial ponds.
