India’s fight against telecom fraud has scored a massive victory, with Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announcing a jaw-dropping 97% reduction in spoofed calls, plummeting from 1.35 crore to just 3 lakh daily, thanks to the government’s Sanchar Saathi portal. Launched to bolster digital security, the platform has drawn 15.5 crore users and over 16 crore hits, with 2 lakh daily users reporting issues via features like “Not My Number” and “Not Required.”
The AI-powered ASTR system has disconnected 82 lakh fraudulent mobile connections by detecting fake documents, while 1.75 crore numbers exceeding individual limits were canceled. Authorities have blocked 5.1 lakh mobile handsets and 24.46 lakh WhatsApp accounts linked to fraud, alongside blacklisting 20,000 bulk SMS senders. The CEIR facility has secured 35 lakh lost or stolen devices, recovering 5.07 lakh for owners, with Telangana leading the nation by returning 88,301 phones.
The CIOR system, launched in October 2024, blocked 1.35 crore international spoofed calls within 24 hours, and complaints about such fraud dropped to single digits by June 2025. Telecom providers now display “International Call” notifications, and 308 international carriers have been blocked. The Digital Intelligence Platform unites 620 organizations, including police and telecom providers, to form a robust anti-fraud network.
