In a landmark medical achievement, a 29-year-old man underwent Southeast Asia’s first hybrid heart surgery in Delhi, combining open bypass with minimally invasive endovascular repair to treat a life-threatening ruptured thoracic abdominal aorta. The procedure was performed at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, and successfully restored blood flow to vital organs, hospital officials reported on Tuesday.
The patient, a resident of Bihar, had been critically ill with uncontrolled internal bleeding and a massively dilated thoracic abdominal aorta, a condition associated with extremely high mortality. Prior misdiagnoses at multiple hospitals in Bihar led to the insertion of a chest tube, worsening internal bleeding and leaving the patient in a dangerously weakened state over several months.
Conventional open surgery was deemed too risky due to the high probability of paralysis, organ failure, and death. After referral to Fortis, a detailed evaluation revealed extensive clot formation compromising blood supply to the kidneys, liver, and intestines. Medical teams determined that a hybrid surgical approach was the only viable option to save his life.

Dr Udgeath Dhir, principal director of Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery at the institute, explained that the advanced procedure combined open bypass surgery with endovascular stent grafting to seal the ruptured aorta while maintaining perfusion to critical organs. Despite a nearly 50 percent estimated mortality risk, the patient recovered successfully and was discharged within six days.
The patient is now stable and undergoing medical management for reduced heart function, with plans for a subsequent cardiac procedure once he fully recovers. The successful surgery marks a significant milestone in hybrid cardiac care in the region, offering hope for high-risk patients previously deemed inoperable.
