In the wake of devastating flash floods that ravaged the Jammu region, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat and Border Security Force (BSF) Additional Director General (ADG), Western Command, S S Khandare conducted separate inspections of the India-Pakistan International Border (IB) in Kathua and Jammu districts on Saturday.
The visits, occurring just before an anticipated tour by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 31, aimed to assess the extensive damage to border infrastructure caused by unprecedented rainfall earlier this week, which triggered widespread flooding and left a trail of destruction.
Official sources report that the floods severely impacted the border security grid, damaging fencing and border outposts along the IB and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts. DGP Prabhat, accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma, and Senior Superintendent of Police Shobhit Saxena, toured forward areas in Kathua.
BSF officers briefed the DGP on the compromised infrastructure and ongoing efforts to maintain heightened vigilance to prevent terrorists from exploiting the situation for infiltration. Prabhat commended the BSF’s relief operations in flood-affected border villages, highlighting their role in aiding local communities amidst the crisis.
Concurrently, ADG Khandare, joined by BSF Inspector General, Jammu Frontier, Shashank Anand, and DIG Chitar Pal, inspected forward posts in the R S Pura sector. The officers reviewed the flood-induced damage and discussed strategies to bolster security measures.
The BSF remains on high alert, leveraging technology and coordinated patrols to ensure zero infiltration, particularly as past incidents have shown terrorists exploiting adverse weather conditions, such as fog, for cross-border activities.
