Karnataka has set an example for the country in strengthening the Panchayati Raj system, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara said, highlighting the state’s efforts to empower local governance institutions. He said effective functioning of village-level bodies has played an important role in ensuring better administration and reaching development programmes to rural communities.
Parameshwara stated that Karnataka’s approach to decentralised governance has helped local representatives take a more active role in addressing public issues. He emphasised that empowering Panchayat institutions allows decisions to be taken closer to the people and helps governments understand and respond to local needs more effectively.
The Deputy Chief Minister pointed out that Panchayati Raj institutions are important pillars of democracy as they provide citizens with direct participation in governance. He said stronger local bodies contribute to improved planning, transparency and implementation of welfare schemes at the grassroots level.

Karnataka has a three-tier Panchayati Raj structure comprising Gram Panchayats, Taluk Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats. Over the years, the state has focused on strengthening these institutions by giving elected representatives greater responsibilities in areas related to rural development, public services and community welfare.
The remarks come as governments across the country continue to focus on improving rural administration and increasing the role of local bodies in development planning. Experts have often stressed that effective Panchayat systems can help bridge gaps between government policies and the actual requirements of communities.
The Karnataka government said it will continue efforts to enhance the capacity of Panchayat institutions and support participatory governance. Officials maintained that empowering local bodies remains essential for inclusive development and ensuring that rural communities have a stronger voice in decisions affecting their lives.
