Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited several flood-affected areas in Upper Assam to assess the damage caused by the recent floods and review relief measures being carried out for affected communities. The visit covered parts of the Nazira, Mahmora, and Sonari Legislative Assembly constituencies in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, marking his second inspection tour of the flood-hit regions following the latest wave of flooding. During his visit, the Chief Minister inspected severely affected areas including Santak, Nepalikhuti, and Sundarpukhuri in the Nazira constituency, Chomoni village in Mahmora, and Ward No. 8 of Sonari town.

He interacted with residents who had been impacted by the floods and reviewed the assistance being provided by local authorities. Officials briefed him on the extent of damage to homes, agricultural land, roads, and other infrastructure. In Nepalikhuti area of Bihubar under the Nazira constituency, Sarma used a tractor to reach flood-ravaged locations and take a closer look at the conditions faced by residents. The Chief Minister spoke with local people and gathered information about their immediate concerns, including access to essential supplies, rehabilitation needs, and the challenges of returning to normal life after the floodwaters recede.

Later, Sarma visited Shulal Kalita village in Sundarpukhuri, where he held discussions with residents and reviewed ongoing relief operations. He assured affected families that the government would take necessary steps to support recovery efforts and address long-term concerns arising from the floods. Speaking to residents, the Chief Minister said that government officials would begin visiting affected households from August 9 to conduct assessments of permanent damage caused by the floods. He said the compensation process would begin after the completion of the damage assessment, allowing authorities to identify families eligible for financial assistance.

Sarma also announced additional measures for flood-affected communities, including organising health camps in impacted areas to address medical concerns after the flooding. He further assured farmers that the government would provide support to help them restart agricultural activities, which have been significantly affected by waterlogging and crop damage. Responding to requests from local residents, the Chief Minister announced that steps would be taken to strengthen and reinforce the Sundarpukhuri embankment to reduce the risk of future flooding. Embankment damage and river erosion remain major challenges in Assam, where seasonal floods frequently affect large parts of the state during the monsoon.

The Assam government has been closely monitoring the flood situation across affected districts, with district administrations involved in rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations. The Chief Minister's visit highlighted the government's focus on immediate assistance as well as long-term measures aimed at improving flood resilience in vulnerable areas. As floodwaters gradually recede in several parts of Upper Assam, authorities are now shifting attention towards damage assessment, compensation distribution, restoration of infrastructure, and support for affected families to rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
