A fire erupted on Sunday afternoon at the luxury Diamond City Residence in Tollygunge, south Kolkata, sending several Bengal film industry celebrities onto the streets in panic. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as residents were safely evacuated.
The blaze reportedly started on the fifth floor of Tower 2, where stars including film couple Yash and Nusrat, and actress-cum-MLA Sayantika Banerjee have flats. Initial investigations suggest a short circuit may have sparked the fire, though authorities continue to examine the cause. Four fire engines were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Director Shubhrajit Mitra, a resident of the building, said the fire might have started during a Shivaratri puja on the fifth floor. “A lamp was left burning during rituals, and in the absence of the residents, it may have ignited the fire,” Mitra explained. He added that evacuating his sick mother from the 18th floor was challenging as the lifts were non-operational.

Yash and Nusrat, whose flat is above the fifth floor, hurriedly came down with their two children as black smoke filled the building. Residents were later relocated to a safe area while fire and police officials ensured no further spread.
This incident has caused concern among local residents, highlighting the need for fire safety vigilance in multi-storey complexes. Two days prior, another fire in Salt Lake’s Globcine Crystal Building had similarly triggered panic, though no casualties were reported.
Authorities are now assessing the damage to property and reviewing safety measures in luxury residential buildings across the city, emphasizing prevention and preparedness for future emergencies.
