Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming Mumbai into a modern, inclusive city while fostering a progressive state. Speaking during a legislative assembly debate on an Opposition-sponsored motion, Fadnavis dismissed claims of attempts to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra, asserting, “No one can take Mumbai away from Maharashtra.”
Fadnavis revealed that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will soon announce plans to convert all Mumbai suburban trains into air-conditioned coaches with automatic doors, enhancing commuter comfort. Addressing concerns about the Dharavi slum redevelopment project, he clarified that land has been allocated to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), a state-partnered special purpose vehicle, not directly to the Adani group, which serves as the developer. The 108-hectare project will rehabilitate all eligible slum-dwellers within Dharavi, with completion targeted within seven years.
Highlighting Dharavi’s role as an economic hub, Fadnavis announced a five-year tax holiday for its pottery and leather artisans. Those ineligible for housing in Dharavi will be relocated elsewhere in Mumbai, with a rental housing scheme allowing tenants to own homes after 12 years. “In all, 10 lakh people will get houses,” he assured.
