Maharashtra took a bold step toward sustainable energy, signing an MoU with Russia’s ROSATOM to develop a thorium-based Small Modular Reactor (SMR).
Inked in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the agreement between Mahagenco and ROSATOM aims to pioneer thorium reactor technology in the state.
The deal focuses on building and commercializing safe, efficient thorium reactors, adhering to Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) standards. It also includes setting up an assembly line under the ‘Make in Maharashtra’ initiative, boosting local industry.
The Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA) will provide strategic support, ensuring alignment with national guidelines.
A joint working group, comprising Mahagenco, ROSATOM, MITRA, and Global Technology Alliance, will drive coordination and research. “This partnership marks a leap toward innovative, clean energy solutions,” the CMO stated on X, emphasizing strict adherence to India’s nuclear safety protocols.
The project positions Maharashtra as a frontrunner in next-generation nuclear technology, leveraging thorium’s abundant potential.
