Operation Sindoor, India’s precision military campaign launched in May 2025, successfully dismantled terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, achieving its objectives without plunging the nation into a prolonged conflict that could have harmed its thriving economy, defence experts affirmed on Sunday.
The operation, initiated in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, was a calibrated, intelligence-led effort that culminated in a four-day military engagement, paused on May 10 through bilateral coordination. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, addressing faculty and students at IIT-Madras on August 4, likened the operation to a strategic chess game, emphasizing its nuanced approach in the “grey zone” of warfare—short of conventional conflict but decisive in impact. His remarks, widely shared on social media, underscored the operation’s blend of military precision and technological advancement.
Lieutenant General Shankar Prasad (Retd) told PTI Videos, “Operation Sindoor achieved its objectives to decimate terror camps and send a clear message to terrorists and their sponsors.” He stressed that prolonging the conflict would have risked India’s economic growth, citing the devastating economic toll of prolonged wars like Russia-Ukraine as a cautionary example.

Major General P K Sehgal (Retd) echoed this sentiment, asserting that India’s principal aim was to deliver a severe blow to terrorism, which was “wholly and totally succeeded.” He criticized those questioning the operation’s pause, noting that extended conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas war, often fail to achieve clear objectives while causing significant economic and human losses.
Experts highlighted that Operation Sindoor’s restraint was a deliberate choice to safeguard India’s economy, the world’s fifth-largest and fastest-growing major economy. A prolonged conflict could have disrupted investor confidence, trade, and growth, particularly in sensitive regions like Jammu & Kashmir, where tourism has already suffered due to the Pahalgam attack. By contrast, the operation’s success bolstered India’s global credibility, with defence exports and strategic trade corridors like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor gaining momentum.
General Dwivedi’s IIT-Madras address also highlighted the Indian Army’s strides in technology absorption, with indigenous platforms like DRDO’s missiles and Bharat Electronics’ radars showcasing the “Make in India” initiative’s success. The operation’s precision strikes, using advanced weaponry like BrahMos missiles and Sukhoi-30MKI jets, demonstrated India’s military sophistication while minimizing civilian impact.
Operation Sindoor not only neutralized terror threats but also reinforced India’s strategic and economic resilience, setting a new benchmark for modern warfare and diplomacy.
