The Supreme Court on Wednesday paused trial court proceedings against YouTuber Elvish Yadav in a high-profile snake venom case, granting temporary relief to the social media star. Justices M M Sundresh and Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and complainant Gaurav Gupta, challenging the chargesheet and criminal proceedings filed against Yadav, following his appeal against an Allahabad High Court ruling that dismissed his plea.
Yadav, a prominent influencer known for reality TV appearances, was arrested by Noida police in March 2024 after allegations surfaced that snake venom was used as a recreational drug at “rave” parties involving foreigners.
The chargesheet claims Yadav’s involvement, but his legal team argues no snakes, narcotics, or psychotropic substances were recovered from him, and no direct link connects him to co-accused individuals. They also questioned the credibility of complainant Gaurav Gupta, who filed the FIR as an Animal Welfare Officer despite no longer holding the position, alleging the case was filed to exploit Yadav’s fame for media attention.
The case, which has drawn significant public scrutiny due to Yadav’s celebrity status, centers on accusations of wildlife law violations and drug-related activities. The Supreme Court’s stay halts the trial pending further hearings, offering Yadav a chance to contest the charges. The decision underscores ongoing debates about influencer accountability and the misuse of legal processes for publicity.
