The Election Commission of India announced on Wednesday that it has begun preparations for the upcoming vice presidential election, triggered by the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Dhankhar stepped down on Monday, citing health concerns, despite his term being scheduled to end on August 10, 2027. The sudden vacancy has prompted the poll panel to act swiftly to ensure constitutional continuity.
The Election Commission is currently constituting an electoral college, which will consist of members from both Houses of Parliament, as required for the vice presidential election. Additionally, the panel is in the process of finalizing the appointment of returning officers to oversee the electoral process.
The Commission emphasized that these preparatory activities are underway and that an official announcement of the election schedule will be made as soon as possible, reflecting the urgency of filling the vacant office.
