Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the ‘Delhi Ko Koode Se Azaadi’ campaign with a hands-on start, sweeping the Women and Child Development Department office in Kashmere Gate on Friday. The month-long drive, aligning with India’s Independence Day, aims to transform Delhi into a clean, green, and healthy city through collective citizen and government action.
“Cleanliness is our civic duty, and this campaign is a people’s movement,” Gupta declared, emphasizing the need for public participation to bolster PM Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission. She highlighted the neglected state of government offices, vowing swift improvements and simpler e-waste and scrap disposal processes.
The campaign’s first day focused on cleaning government offices, with Gupta herself clearing garbage and old files to set the tone. “Every street, colony, market, and public space will shine,” she promised, urging MLAs, councillors, and citizens to join the effort. The initiative, backed by a Rs 5 crore fund from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, will target schools, hospitals, and offices on days one and two, followed by weekend drives in unauthorized colonies and slum clusters.

Special cleanups are planned for Yamuna Ghats on August 14, 21, and 28, with Ring Road set for intensive cleaning on August 29 and 31. To spur community involvement, top Resident Welfare Associations will win cash prizes—Rs 25 lakh, Rs 15 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh for first, second, and third places.
Gupta’s vision for a waste-free Delhi has sparked enthusiasm, with the campaign poised to make cleanliness a lasting habit across the capital.
