A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Haryana’s Jhajjar district at around 9:04 AM IST, jolting Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) areas, including Noida and Gurugram. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the quake’s epicenter was 10 km north of Jhajjar, at a shallow depth of 5 km, intensifying its impact across the region.
Residents across Delhi reported swaying fans and household items, prompting many to rush out of their homes in fear. In office hubs like Noida and Gurugram, professionals felt computer systems shake, disrupting work and sparking panic. Social media buzzed with reactions, with users describing the tremors lasting nearly a minute, coinciding eerily with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return to Delhi after a five-nation tour.
Delhi, located in seismic Zone IV, is prone to frequent tremors due to its proximity to the Himalayan tectonic plate boundary. The region has a history of quakes, with a notable 5.6 magnitude event in 1960 causing partial damage to buildings. More recently, a 4.0 magnitude quake hit Delhi on February 17, 2025, with its epicenter near Dhaula Kuan. No casualties or significant damage have been reported from today’s event, but authorities are monitoring for potential aftershocks, urging residents to stay alert.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority emphasizes preparedness, as the region faces quakes of 5-6 magnitude regularly, with rare instances reaching 7-8. Emergency helplines are active, and metro services faced brief disruptions, causing commuter delays. As seismic activity remains a concern, today’s quake serves as a stark reminder of Delhi-NCR’s vulnerability.
