Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has ignited a political firestorm by questioning the mysterious circumstances surrounding the abrupt resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, a native of Rajasthan. In a scathing critique, Gehlot labeled the government’s explanation—that Dhankhar resigned due to health reasons—as an “attempt to divert attention” from pressing questions that have left the nation anxious and perplexed.
Speaking to reporters in Jaipur, Gehlot described the resignation as “unprecedented,” noting that Dhankhar was actively performing his duties, chairing meetings until 5 P.M. on July 21, 2025, only to resign by 8 P.M. and subsequently vanish from public view. “You must not have seen such an example in India, perhaps not even in the world,” Gehlot remarked, emphasizing the lack of transparency. “Nobody knows if he is even in the Vice President’s residence or not, and he is meeting no one.”
Gehlot challenged Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s claim that Dhankhar stepped down for health reasons, questioning why no senior government figure, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Shah himself, visited or inquired about Dhankhar’s well-being. “If it was truly a health issue, why did no one check on him? Not the Prime Minister, not the Home Minister, not even a junior minister,” Gehlot said, accusing the government of misleading the public. “The whole country is concerned about what has happened, and people will not be misled.”

The Congress veteran highlighted that ministers typically provide detailed explanations for resignations in Parliament, yet neither Dhankhar nor the government has offered clarity. Gehlot’s concerns echo those of other opposition leaders, including Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh and Independent MP Kapil Sibal, who have also raised alarms about Dhankhar’s absence. Gehlot revealed he personally attempted to contact Dhankhar multiple times without success, noting that Sibal, a close associate of Dhankhar, faced similar difficulties. “Shouldn’t this be a matter of concern for the nation?” he asked.
Gehlot’s remarks carry added weight given Dhankhar’s Rajasthan roots, amplifying local and national curiosity about his whereabouts. “The entire state is worried about him. Elections and politics will continue, but the real question is: where is Dhankhar Sahib? When will the people see him?” he pressed.
The controversy has fueled speculation, with opposition leaders suggesting Dhankhar’s resignation may stem from political differences, possibly linked to his acceptance of an opposition-sponsored impeachment notice against a judge. As the nation awaits answers, Gehlot’s pointed questions underscore a growing demand for transparency, casting a shadow over the government’s narrative and intensifying public concern about the former Vice President’s sudden disappearance from the political stage.
