Torrential rainfall battered Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad on Monday, triggering widespread waterlogging, massive traffic congestion, and significant disruptions across the National Capital Region (NCR). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for September 1, accurately predicting heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
The downpour, which darkened skies during daylight and forced commuters to use headlights, brought a sharp drop in temperatures but paralyzed daily life in the region.
Worst-hit areas included Gurugram’s NH8 Jaipur Expressway, Badshahpur, Manesar, and Sohna, where flooded roads left vehicles stranded and commuters struggling through inundated underpasses and low-lying streets. Gurugram traffic police responded swiftly, with personnel assisting stranded motorists, as seen in a video of officers pushing a stalled mini truck through floodwaters.
Arterial roads across the NCR saw bumper-to-bumper traffic, with movement reduced to a crawl, severely impacting officegoers and public transport. Social media platforms like X buzzed with commuters’ frustrations over the chaos.
The IMD has forecast another spell of rain with thunder and lightning on September 3, raising concerns about further disruptions. Civic agencies are on alert, but persistent drainage issues continue to challenge the region’s monsoon preparedness, underscoring the need for long-term infrastructure solutions to mitigate recurring waterlogging crises.
