The Delhi government is set to kick off a month-long cleanliness campaign on August 1, rallying schools, resident welfare associations (RWAs), and community groups to transform the capital’s sanitation landscape. Education and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood announced the initiative, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for visible cleanliness efforts, during a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat on Friday.
The campaign aims to engage every corner of the city, with a focus on unauthorised colonies, slums, and underdeveloped areas. Sood emphasized collective responsibility, urging RWAs and locals to maintain cleanliness in their neighborhoods. “The impact must be felt on the ground,” he said, directing officials to amplify awareness through street plays, songs, posters, and public announcements.
The Education Department was tasked with involving government and private schools, extending activities beyond campuses to parks, markets, streets, and religious sites. Students will serve as “Cleanliness Ambassadors,” encouraging families to join the drive. Government offices will conduct internal cleanliness drives on August 1 and 2, setting the tone for the campaign.

A dedicated portal, managed by the Urban Development Department and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), will allow citizens and RWAs to register, upload photos of cleaned areas, and flag spots needing attention. The Revenue Department will deploy teams of senior officers to engage RWAs and promote hygiene awareness.
The meeting, attended by the chief secretary, MCD, New Delhi Municipal Council, and officials from Health, Education, IT, and Revenue Departments, also saw Sood propose involving celebrities to boost participation. District magistrates were instructed to ensure the campaign’s reach across Delhi’s diverse communities.
With preparations underway, the government aims to make the campaign a model for sustainable urban cleanliness, building on past Swachh Bharat initiatives that collected 1,200 tonnes of waste in Delhi in 2024.
