In a significant legal relief for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the removal of certain social media posts described as "obscene and explicit" that allegedly defamed him. The order was passed in response to a petition filed by Chadha seeking protection against the circulation of defamatory and AI-manipulated content online, which he argued had harmed his reputation and violated his personality rights.
Chadha approached the High Court alleging that fabricated and manipulated content targeting him was being widely circulated on social media platforms. In his petition, he contended that the posts were defamatory in nature and had been created or altered using artificial intelligence tools, resulting in serious prejudice to his public image and personal reputation. He sought judicial intervention to prevent the continued dissemination of such content and to safeguard his legal rights.
Hearing the matter, a single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court directed that the identified content be taken down. The court's order is being seen as an important development in addressing the growing misuse of artificial intelligence and digital platforms to create and spread allegedly defamatory material. While the detailed reasoning behind the order has not been made public, the direction underscores the judiciary's increasing engagement with issues surrounding online misinformation, deepfakes and digital privacy.

Following the ruling, Chadha's legal team welcomed the decision, describing it as a positive step towards protecting individuals from coordinated online defamation. "The order passed today by the Hon'ble Single Judge of the Delhi High Court is a welcome step as it directed takedown of defamatory content against Mr Chadha, thereby protecting individuals from organised defamatory content on social media," the counsel said in a statement. Senior advocate Rajiv Nayar represented Chadha before the court.
The case highlights the growing legal challenges posed by AI-generated and digitally manipulated content, which has become an increasing concern for public figures, policymakers and courts. As artificial intelligence tools become more sophisticated, legal experts have called for stronger safeguards to prevent their misuse while balancing the right to free expression. The Delhi High Court's order is likely to be closely watched as similar disputes involving online reputation, personality rights and AI-generated content continue to emerge in India's evolving digital landscape.
