A fire broke out on the second floor of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) building at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata in the early hours of Tuesday. The incident caused panic among airport staff, but the blaze was brought under control quickly by firefighters and airport authorities. Flight operations continued normally, and there was no major disruption to services at the airport.
According to airport staff, security guards and other personnel on duty noticed flames emerging from the second floor of the ATC building at around 4 am. The fire reportedly spread across a limited section of the building, producing thick black smoke. Fire engines stationed near the airport were immediately sent to the location, while additional firefighting teams were deployed because of the importance and sensitive nature of the ATC facility.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze within a short time and subsequently carried out cooling operations to prevent the possibility of the fire restarting. An airport official said the fire was largely confined to an open area and did not cause significant damage to the ATC operations. The official added that there was no need to evacuate the entire building as firefighters were able to identify the source of the fire and contain it quickly.

The incident did not affect flight operations at Kolkata airport. Airport authorities continued normal activities after the fire was brought under control, while teams monitored the affected area. Given the critical role of the ATC building in managing aircraft movements, emergency teams responded promptly to ensure that the incident did not escalate or interfere with airport operations.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary suspicion has reportedly focused on decorative electrical lights installed on the second floor during Independence Day-related decoration work. Officials are examining whether the lights may have been left switched on for an extended period or whether a short circuit involving the wiring could have triggered the blaze.
Authorities are also investigating whether any other electrical or mechanical fault, maintenance issue or negligence contributed to the incident. The fire was brought under control without any reported major impact on ATC functioning or flight operations. Further findings from the investigation are expected to establish the precise cause and circumstances of the blaze.
