Moderate rainfall swept through the national capital on Sunday afternoon, causing significant traffic disruptions in several key areas, according to officials. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported showers in locations such as Preet Vihar, Rajeev Chowk, ITO, Jafarpur, India Gate, Akshardham, Safdarjung, Lodi Road, Nehru Stadium, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Ayanagar, and Deramandi.
The downpour led to traffic snarls in prominent areas including ITO, Lajpat Nagar, and Connaught Place, complicating travel for commuters. Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded 36 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM, the IMD noted. The minimum temperature was recorded at 23.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the seasonal average, with the maximum temperature expected to reach around 31 degrees Celsius. High humidity levels, peaking at 97 percent at 8:30 AM, added to the city’s discomfort.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert, forecasting light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the coming hours. Despite the inclement weather, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 63 at 4:00 PM. An AQI between 51 and 100 is classified as ‘satisfactory,’ indicating acceptable air quality with minimal health risks.
