Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed officials of the Delhi Commission for Women to strengthen awareness campaigns on issues affecting girls, particularly offences covered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the growing threat of cybercrime. The directions were issued during a meeting with the Commission on Friday, as the government reviewed measures to improve safety, accessibility and support systems for women and children.
The Chief Minister asked the DCW to expand its activities at the grassroots level and ensure that information about legal protections and available support reaches girls and families in local communities. The proposed awareness efforts are expected to focus on helping children recognise unsafe situations, understand their rights and know where to seek assistance when faced with abuse, harassment or online threats.
Ms. Gupta also emphasised the need to strengthen the Commission’s online complaint system. The platform is expected to become more responsive and accessible so that women and girls can report grievances more easily and receive timely assistance. Improving the complaint mechanism was seen as an important step towards ensuring that people do not face difficulties while approaching authorities during sensitive situations.

The Chief Minister suggested involving willing non-governmental organisations, civil society groups and resident welfare associations in the awareness campaign. Their participation would help extend the reach of the initiative beyond government offices and bring information directly to neighbourhoods, schools and residential communities.
The proposed campaign is expected to address both offline and online risks faced by children. While POCSO-related awareness would focus on preventing sexual abuse and informing children about protective laws, cybercrime awareness would cover dangers linked to digital platforms, online exploitation, inappropriate contact and the misuse of personal information.
The directions come as authorities seek greater community participation in women’s and children’s safety initiatives. By involving local organisations and improving complaint systems, the Delhi government aims to create a more accessible support network and ensure that awareness about legal safeguards and reporting mechanisms reaches vulnerable groups at the community level.
