Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her camp office in Civil Lines today, prompting swift action from authorities. The accused, identified as Rajesh Bhaiji, a 35-year-old resident of Rajkot, Gujarat, was detained by Delhi Police and is currently under interrogation, according to a senior police officer. North Delhi DCP and other senior officials are investigating at the scene.
The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the attack, stating that it occurred while Gupta was engaging with the public. According to Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, who met with the CM post-incident, the assailant approached Gupta, handed her some papers, and then grabbed her hand, attempting to pull her toward him.
A scuffle ensued, and attendees quickly overpowered the attacker. Sachdeva clarified that reports of Gupta being slapped or pelted with a stone were false, emphasizing that such acts in politics are unacceptable. He noted that Gupta, though shaken, is unharmed and resting but remains committed to her scheduled programs.
Security at the camp office has been significantly strengthened, and the Ministry of Home Affairs has been notified. An eyewitness recounted the chaos, describing a loud sound during the attack before police swiftly detained the suspect. Shailender Kumar, a complainant present at the event, expressed dismay, stating, “This is not right.”
