Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked during her weekly 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her official residence in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning, according to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The incident, which has sparked outrage, occurred around 9:00 AM when a man, estimated to be around 35 years old, approached the Chief Minister under the guise of submitting documents before allegedly assaulting her.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the attack, calling it a "shocking breach of security" and demanding a thorough investigation. "Such an act against the Chief Minister during a public interaction is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about safety," Sachdeva said in a statement. The BJP’s Delhi unit reported that the assailant handed Gupta some papers, a common practice during the public grievance redressal session, before launching the attack.

Police have detained the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, and are investigating the motive behind the incident. Preliminary reports suggest no weapons were involved, and Gupta was unharmed but shaken. The 'Jan Sunwai' programme, designed to allow citizens to directly raise concerns with the Chief Minister, was temporarily halted following the incident, with security tightened around the residence.

The attack has fueled political tensions, with the BJP accusing opposition parties of fostering an environment of hostility, though no specific group was named.
