The attack on Delhi CM during a 'Jan Sunwai' public hearing at her Civil Lines Camp Office on Wednesday, August 20 has lead to immediate arrests and a significant overhaul of her security arrangements. The assailant, Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, a 41-year-old from Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly pulled Gupta’s hair and assaulted her around 8:15 AM. He was swiftly overpowered, arrested, and sent to five days of police custody after being presented before a magistrate in Dwarka late Wednesday night, bypassing Tis Hazari court.

The Delhi Police have charged Khimjibhai under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder, alongside charges for assaulting and obstructing a public servant. The Chief Minister’s Office called the attack a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her,” citing CCTV evidence showing Khimjibhai conducting reconnaissance at Gupta’s Shalimar Bagh residence 24 hours prior.

Gupta sustained minor injuries to her hand, shoulder, and head, and underwent a medico-legal examination. Khimjibhai, who arrived in Delhi two days earlier and stayed at Gujarati Bhawan in Civil Lines, reportedly acted out of frustration over a Supreme Court order on stray dogs, though police are probing potential political motives with assistance from the Intelligence Bureau and Special Cell.

In response, Delhi Police have deployed paramilitary forces outside Gupta’s residence and announced sweeping changes to her security protocols. “Complainants will no longer directly approach the Chief Minister during 'Jan Sunwai' sessions,” a police source stated. “Every complaint will undergo verification, and a designated perimeter will ensure visitors cannot come close to her.”

These measures, effective immediately, aim to prevent similar incidents during future public hearings. The revised protocols follow public outcry and concerns over Gupta’s safety, with local resident Anjali Verma stating, “Such attacks are unacceptable. The government must ensure our leaders are protected.”
