The 14th Dalai Lama, Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was discharged from Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi on Friday morning after undergoing successful left knee replacement surgery earlier this week. Medical officials confirmed that the procedure, performed on June 8, was completed without complications and the spiritual leader has made a steady recovery under close supervision.
According to Dr Rajesh Malhotra, Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospitals, the Dalai Lama remained stable throughout his treatment and was monitored continuously by his personal medical team in coordination with hospital staff and administrative authorities. He said the successful surgery marks another milestone in the spiritual leader’s ongoing medical care, following a similar right knee replacement surgery performed in 2024 in the United States.
The hospital confirmed that the Dalai Lama was discharged after being declared fit for travel and rest. Medical teams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to treat him and highlighted the coordinated efforts between the hospital and his personal caregivers. The development comes amid widespread concern among followers worldwide regarding the health of the 90-year-old spiritual leader.

Following his discharge, the Dalai Lama is expected to travel to Ladakh for an extended stay. Due to his recovery schedule, he is likely to miss his 91st birthday celebrations in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, which are traditionally attended by large gatherings of devotees and supporters. However, he is expected to participate in a public programme marking his birthday in Leh on July 6.
The Dalai Lama’s visits to Ladakh, a remote Himalayan region bordering Tibet, are often significant both spiritually and politically, drawing attention from followers as well as criticism from China. Despite health challenges, he has continued to travel and address public gatherings across the region, maintaining his active engagement with global Buddhist communities.
With both knees now having undergone replacement surgeries, the spiritual leader is expected to continue his recovery while balancing medical advice with planned public appearances. His last visit to Ladakh took place in July last year, and his upcoming trip is expected to be closely monitored by medical professionals to ensure his continued well-being.
