A cyclonic storm has formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal, intensifying from a deep depression, and is moving in a west-northwesterly direction. Meteorologists say it may strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm within the next 48 hours, raising concerns for coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and nearby areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Category I cyclone warning for several ports, including Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam, Nizampatnam, Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram, and Kakinada. Authorities are urging fishermen and coastal residents to remain alert and avoid venturing into the sea until the storm passes.
The storm’s impact is expected to extend to Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted over the next three days. Local officials have also warned of strong winds and possible disruptions in coastal transport and fishing activities.

In Andhra Pradesh’s interior, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in districts like Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, Annamayya, Chittoor, and Tirupati over the weekend. Though the northeast monsoon typically ends by December, this late-season system is expected to bring unseasonal showers to the region.
Historically, cyclones in January and February are rare in the Bay of Bengal. Data from 1891 to 2024 shows only a handful of severe storms forming during this period, with most hitting Sri Lanka rather than Andhra Pradesh.
Officials have urged vigilance and preparedness, noting that early warning systems and disaster management teams are in place to respond to emergencies. Residents are advised to monitor updates closely and follow official guidance.
