Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Sunday announced measures to strengthen yoga education, training and research in the state, describing yoga as much more than a physical exercise and calling it a way of life. He made the remarks while addressing a state-level mass yoga programme organised at the PG College Ground in Ambikapur on the occasion of the 12th International Yoga Day.
Speaking before a large gathering, the Chief Minister said the state government is committed to expanding the reach of yoga and promoting its institutional development. As part of this effort, the government has approved a proposal to shift the subject of yoga from the Social Welfare Department to the Department of Medical Education. The move is intended to provide greater support for academic, training and research activities related to yoga.
Sai said yoga forms an important component of the AYUSH system and that the administrative change would help accelerate educational programmes, public awareness campaigns and scientific research in the field. According to him, the government's objective is to ensure that yoga reaches every village, school, college and section of society, encouraging healthier lifestyles across the state.

Describing yoga as one of India's most valuable cultural and spiritual contributions, the Chief Minister said it promotes harmony between the body, mind and soul. He noted that regular practice of yoga helps individuals develop discipline, positive energy, emotional balance and inner strength, making it relevant in modern life where stress and lifestyle-related health issues are increasing.
Referring to this year's International Yoga Day theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," Sai said the message highlights the growing need for preventive healthcare and holistic well-being. He stated that yoga offers a simple and effective way for people of all age groups to remain physically active, mentally alert and emotionally stable, contributing to overall health and quality of life.
The Chief Minister also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping yoga gain global recognition. He recalled that India's proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 received broad international support, leading to the establishment of International Yoga Day. Sai said the worldwide celebration of yoga every year reflects India's cultural heritage and growing influence in promoting wellness and healthy living across the globe.
