The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted its report to the Lokpal regarding the alleged cash-for-query scam involving Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra and businessman Darshan Hiranandani, officials confirmed on Monday. The CBI filed an FIR on March 21, 2024, under the Prevention of Corruption Act, following a Lokpal reference, accusing Moitra of accepting bribes and compromising national security by sharing her Lok Sabha login credentials with Hiranandani.
The allegations, raised by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, claim Moitra asked questions in Parliament in exchange for cash and gifts from Hiranandani, targeting industrialist Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Lokpal, acting on the CBI’s preliminary inquiry, directed further investigation. The agency’s findings, now with the Lokpal, will determine the next steps.
Moitra, who retained her Krishnanagar seat in the 2024 elections by defeating BJP’s Amrita Roy, was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December 2023 for “unethical conduct.” She has challenged the expulsion in the Supreme Court, maintaining her stance as a vocal critic. The Lokpal’s decision will be pivotal in addressing the serious allegations of corruption and security breaches leveled against the Trinamool Congress MP.
