Eleven coaches of the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express (Train No. 12551) derailed near Nergundi Station in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday, disrupting rail traffic along the busy Cuttack-Nergundi section of the East Coast Railway’s Khurda Road Division. The incident occurred at approximately 11:54 AM IST, 7 injuries have been reported and no casualties have been reported so far, according to railway officials.
The derailment took place as the train, en route from SMVT Bengaluru to Kamakhya near Guwahati, passed through the Choudwar area. Ashok Kumar Mishra, Chief Public Relations Officer of East Coast Railway (ECoR), confirmed that all passengers are safe. “We received information about the derailment of 11 AC coaches. Emergency measures were immediately activated,” Mishra said. Senior officials, including the General Manager and Divisional Railway Manager of Khurda Road, rushed to the site, accompanied by accident relief and medical relief trains.
Railway authorities have mobilized resources, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire services, to assist stranded passengers. A special train is being arranged to ferry them to their destinations, while helplines—8455885999 (Bhubaneswar) and 8991124238 (Cuttack)—have been activated. Three trains, including the Dhauli Express and Neelachal Express, have been diverted due to the disruption.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, with initial reports suggesting a possible technical glitch. Restoration efforts are underway, but passengers faced delays and discomfort amid the heat, with some seeking alternate transport. This marks a rare incident on this route, spotlighting safety concerns as officials work to clear the tracks and resume normal operations.
