The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary board, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the vice-presidential election on August 17, 2025. BJP president JP Nadda revealed that Radhakrishnan’s nomination followed extensive deliberations during a high-level meeting in New Delhi, emphasizing his selection as a strategic choice for the upcoming poll.
The vice-presidential election, set for September 9, 2025, was triggered by the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month. With the deadline for filing nominations approaching on August 22, Nadda expressed optimism about securing support from opposition parties, urging them to back Radhakrishnan to ensure a unified electoral process.
Radhakrishnan, a seasoned politician and former Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore, has served as Maharashtra’s Governor since February 2023, earning praise for his administrative acumen. His nomination underscores the NDA’s focus on experienced leadership to fill the ceremonial yet significant role of Vice-President, who also serves as the Rajya Sabha Chairperson.
